REMS/Remote Rescue Workshop – CMC

Master Advanced Rapid Extraction Module Support (REMS) & Austere Rope Tactic Skills

As wildland fire incidents escalate, the frontline demand for highly skilled, agile technical rescue personnel has never been more urgent. Traditional heavy-rescue caches are often impossible to deploy deep into the backcountry.

Our intensive, 4-Day REMS / Remote Rescue Workshop goes far beyond standard rope operations and technician courses. Specially engineered for wildland firefighters, search and rescue (SAR) teams, and technical rescue professionals, this course equips small teams to operate autonomously in hazardous, sub-optimal, and austere environments using lightweight equipment.

Our curriculum is built directly from real-world REMS field deployments and extensive technical expertise in mountain rescue. This course explicitly meets the rigorous requirements and intent of FIRESCOPE ICS 162-4 (2024) and NWCG PMS 552.

Why Specialized REMS Training Matters

Standard vertical rescue training relies on heavy, robust systems. When deployed on the fireline or in deep wilderness, your team must be fast, light, and adaptive. This workshop bridges the gap between traditional structural rope rescue and the highly specialized tactics required for wildland firefighter medical support and technical remote evacuations.

Core Skills & Techniques Taught

Through a mix of technical briefings and immersive, realistic field scenarios, students will master:

  • Lightweight & Small Diameter Systems
    • Advanced evaluation of forces applied to lightweight gear.
    • Setup and tactical deployment of mission-appropriate 9.5mm and 11mm rescue systems.
    • Maximizing mechanical advantage with minimal, highly portable gear caches.
  • Austere Rigging & Single Rope Tactics
    • Risk-based analysis and deployment of single rope rescue (SRT) systems.
    • Evaluation and placement of sub-optimal, natural, and austere anchors.
  • Patient Management & Transport Across Varied Terrain
    • Multi-angle evacuation strategies: Low-angle, steep-angle, and vertical options.
    • Advanced litter handling and packaging for remote transport.
  • Small Team Leadership & Command
    • Optimizing team composition, coordination, and safety under high-stress conditions.
    • Incident Command System (ICS) integration for REMS module deployment.

Course Prerequisites & Requirements

To maintain a high level of safety and fast-paced instruction, participants must meet the following criteria:
