DESCRIPTION:Offset/Highline Rescue Workshop \nTuition: $1750 \nFor years\, emergency rope rescuers and rope access technicians have asked for a training program on temporary rigging employing elevated rope tracking elements. The OFFSET / HIGHLINE RESCUE WORKSHOP is just the type of program where these elevated options can be explored in detail. The program looks at subtle\, yet fundamental differences between the use of high-angle offsets and drooping and/or reeving highlines for canyon/industrial locations where abundant high anchors are plentiful. Therefore\, this is NOT a program that explores highly tensioned spanning elements (like the Kootenay Highline System) where high- or full-strength connections are mandated at either end\, but rather only a look at other low-tension highlines that can be used over gaps with higher anchorages. The OHRW is not an extensive highline workshop like the Advanced Skills Rescue Workshop (that program focuses on 100% highlines and the Kootenay Highline System).

DESCRIPTION:Artificial High Directional Workshop (AHDW) \nTuition: $1750 \nDates: May 10 – 16\, 2026 \nThis workshop would be suitable for ANY manufactured or improvised high directional (not including wood frame)\, including the Larkin Frame\, SMC Terradaptor\, or Ferno Aracnipod (students requesting training on these artificial high directionals (AHD) are required to bring these devices with them to their program). This program concentrates on constructed frames in general and is not intended to teach highlines\, advanced pulley systems\, or offsets (although some of these are touched upon). Physics\, as it relates to high directionals\, is covered in an extensive manual and several lectures. The AHDW is a hands-on workshop on the use and correct implementation of AHD for industry and wilderness settings. The AHDW is also well suited for teaching rope access professionals the benefits of constructed frames in their work.

DESCRIPTION:Mountain Rescue Workshop (MRW) \nTuition: $1600 (50% off AZ Volunteer discounting available) \nDates: 18 – 24 April 2026 \nThe student will learn how to design and build system anchors from bolts\, pitons\, and active and passive rock climbing camming devices. We strongly emphasize wilderness improvised techniques. Specialized or heavier equipment has no place here. We encourage using whipped and frapped wood frames as high directionals. Sometimes\, if students prefer\, we also focus on the Rock Exotica Arizona Vortex. Reed Thorne developed this vortex in Sedona\, AZ. For example\, in the 2022 Alaska MRW\, most students were mountain SAR members. They wanted to use only wood frames\, and we encouraged this. Other MRW classes wanted diversity because the timber is more scarce. It depends on the location of the MRW.

DESCRIPTION:Tree Rescue Workshop – Firefighter (TRW-F) \nTuition: $1\,750 \nDate: 10-16 October \nFor power delivery utilities\, Reed has always warned that linemen should be the first to get a fellow injured lineman down from a tower. If the fire department takes over that incident\, it will take many times longer\, as the emergency agencies need to have safeties in place to access a power line. With trees\, it is much the same. An arborist is the first line rescuer of a co-worker up in a tree\, as well they should be. But often\, the fire department is called because there is a breakdown in the rescue effort or there is no one to perform it. Hence\, the fire services need to have training on how to approach these difficult bottom-up rescues short of using an aerial platform or ladder. \nThe TRW-F is a rescue class for fire and emergency services—not for arborists. We employ techniques\, ropes\, and equipment that would be found on a special operations rescue truck. \n  \nThe RTR Instructors: Keith &amp; Reed Thorne \nKeith Thorne main occupation: ARBORIST. DESCRIPTION:Advanced Skills Rescue Workshop (ASRW) \nTuition: $1\,750 \nDate: 22-28 September \nPrerequisite: Must have completed one program: TSRW\, OHRW\, IRW\, AHDW from RTR \nThe course begins abruptly with an impromptu field exercise to assess existing skill level within the “team.” Instructors emphasize placing low-tech solutions to rescue scenarios before heading into technical solutions in the form of highlines. The seminar then explores all the available possibilities for setting up a horizontal\, sloping\, or steep highline for removing\, transporting\, or inserting rescuers or a patient. \n  \nThe main event of the eight-day ASRW seminar is an extreme highline of over 600′ station-to-station high above the valley floor treetops. The ASRW also explores all aspects of advanced rigging\, including fall factors (ideal and practical)\, and reviews the belay drop test data more acutely than previous courses. The Advanced Skills Rescue Workshop is rigging intensive!
