Rescue work presents significant challenges, as I know firsthand from my experience as a rescue technician. Nighttime rescues are even more demanding, increasing the difficulty of the task. Accurately judging terrain steepness and slot canyon depth becomes a greater challenge when rappelling in darkness. When Tonto Search and Rescue Arizona received a dark water rescue call, they meticulously checked their gear and skills. Ultimately, the rescue operation began on a night that was dark, challenging, and cold.
The dedicated Tonto Search and Rescue Arizona team trains regularly to ensure their rescue technicians have the necessary tools for success. A rope featuring a reflective tracer significantly improves visibility during nighttime operations. When facing challenging odds and responding to a call in the dark, even small details can make a crucial difference.
Our vision is significantly limited after dark, a well-known fact in rescue operations. Because Tonto Search and Rescue Arizona struggled to see rope at a distance at night, they contacted us a few years ago. We provided them with a special order 7/16” Sterling HTP rope. This rope included a reflective tracer and met rescue certifications like NFPA T and ANSI Z133. With this reflective rope, they confidently executed their nighttime rescue, easily locating their rope with a quick flash of light.
